Customer Story: Fervo Energy
The Cape Station main power transformer, rated 340 MVA and weighing more than 500,000 lbs, on site in Beaver County, Utah.
Cape Station, Fervo Energy
Engineered to the duty cycle it would actually face. On site, on schedule.
Fervo Energy is building its first commercial-scale geothermal project in Beaver County, Utah, using horizontal drilling and distributed sensing to reach geothermal heat with low land use and minimal emissions. The result is 24/7 carbon-free baseload power. Virginia Transformer engineered and manufactured the main power transformer that steps Cape Station Phase I onto the grid.
THE CHALLENGE
Geothermal does not behave like the sources a standard transformer specification assumes. Cape Station Phase I needed a main power transformer able to step up and transmit 100 MW of firm geothermal power, and in a market where transformer availability is tight, the delivery date governed the project’s date for first power.
THE APPROACH
Virginia Transformer engineered and manufactured the 500,000+ lb main power transformer to Cape Station’s actual duty cycle, not to a generic load profile. The design was proven out before manufacturing began, and factory acceptance testing confirmed what the engineering predicted.
THE OUTCOME
The unit is on site in Beaver County and supports long-distance transmission to contracted California offtakers. Phase I is on track for first power in Q4 2026, and Phase II is planned to expand the site to 400 to 500 MW.
On Site: Delivered to Beaver County, Utah.
Firm Baseload: Enables 100 MW of 24/7 geothermal power.
Transmission Reach: Supports contracted California offtakers.
No Startup Delay: No commissioning delay from the transformer scope.
Electrification, AI, and data center growth are driving demand that makes reliable baseload, and the long-lead equipment behind it, more consequential. Custom is the standard here, not the exception.
