Virginia Transformer recently completed the design, manufacture, and testing of a 69 kV, 350 BIL voltage regulator for a key utilities partner. This significant engineering achievement represents our commitment to delivering customized power solutions for our customers and further solidifies our position as the industry leader in cutting-edge transformer manufacturing.
The U.S. voltage regulator market is experiencing notable growth, driven by grid modernization efforts, integration of renewable energy sources, and the overall rising demand for a stable power supply. 69 kV systems are gaining prominence due to their ability to support modern grid loads and facilitate long-distance power distribution while meeting rigorous standards in dielectric strength and thermal management.
Until recently, Virginia Transformer had been designing and manufacturing voltage regulators up to 46 kV, 250 BIL. However, with increasing market interest in higher ratings and our commitment to customer satisfaction, we took on the complex task of developing the 69 kV, 350 BIL regulator.
Designing at this level required innovative solutions in dielectric engineering, LTC (load tap changer) selection for withstanding transient voltage, and specialized winding configurations using interleaved sections. After overcoming several design challenges and applying various mitigation techniques, our Roanoke plant (VTCR) successfully completed the design, assembly, and full-scale testing of the unit, ensuring it meets the highest standards for safety, performance, and reliability.
This project demonstrates our unwavering dedication to innovation, customer service, and engineering excellence. As power demands grow and evolve, Virginia Transformer will continue to lead the charge in developing advanced transformer solutions delivered with the shortest lead times in the industry.
