    VTC Roanoke

Recently our Roanoke and Rincon plants were both audited by a major Northeast IOU customer.  We are thrilled to say that both of the plants passed the audit and expectations with flying colors!
As a result of this audit, the Roanoke plant is now in a position to deliver a blanket that includes several units rated – 10/12.5//(14.5) MVA; 12/16/20//(26.5) MVA; 20/26.6/33.3//(37) MVA with LTC, while Rincon will be in a position to deliver units rated 60/80/100//(112) MVA with LTC
Our outstanding track record of plant approvals continues to demonstrate our commitment and progress in power transformer development.

Our Roanoke plant successfully tested a unit at 650 kV impulse voltage (BIL) for a reputable energy management company based in Texas. The unit was rated 15/20/25//28 MVA, 138 kV with LTC.

What is the significance of this test?

We interviewed Parminder Panesar, Technical Manager at the Roanoke plant:
Parminder Headshot

Q:Parminder, what is special about this 650-kV impulse test?

Parminder: Please note that 138 kV is the most popular primary voltage in the US and the typical BIL associated with this voltage is 550 kV. Some customers, however, specify 650 kV BIL for this voltage class. Obviously, we have the design & manufacturing capability for 650 kV BIL but our Roanoke plant had a limitation in our impulse test equipment of 550 kV BIL. This would require us to move such units to other plants, such as Pocatello or Rincon – thus preventing us from leveraging our Roanoke plant for customers located in the Northeast.

Now we can design, manufacture and test 650 kV BIL units at Roanoke thus giving us more capacity and flexibility to meet our customer’s needs.

Q:How did you manage to upgrade the capability to 650 kV BIL?

Parminder: We decided that the best way to upgrade the system was to replace the old one. The new system now has 30% more capacity than the old test set so we now have 1000kV capability to meet the 650BIL test.

Q: What is the logic behind installing the new test set?

Parminder: I would give two reasons:

  1. Ten 100kV – capacitor section test set will give us some redundancy for this critical unit
  2. A Strategic opportunity to extend the voltage range at Roanoke

Top BIL Rating for plants
Current Top BIL ranges of our four plants.

This expanded offering continues to demonstrate our commitment and progress in power transformer development.

Utility Success Story

UTILITIES NEWS

Date : October 6, 2017 | Author : vtc

The Western region of the Public Power Utilities team had a great 3rd quarter 2017. The main contributor to this success was City of Vernon in CA who awarded VT-GT with a prestigious contract to supply four (4) 66/16.34 kV, 33.6//56 MVA unit Load Tap Changers to Vernon’s Leonis SS upgrades.  The best part of the deal is that VT-GT was L5 after evaluation of Total Ownership Cost with not only Far East competition like Pan America & Iljin but North American companies like WEG & CG lower than us, however VT-GT was preferred over these bidders.

The entire credit of winning this contract in the most competitive environment goes to the prior experience & relationship we shared with Vernon and with our Southern CA rep Richard Salemme – McAvoy & Markham playing an instrumental role. Richard & Sunny Xavier started early in the game (a couple of months before the bids hit the street) to help the engineers at Vernon with budget prices & develop the specifications with several conference calls & follow ups. A total of 12 bidders from Far East & North America participated in the bid & VT-GT emerged as the winner.

WATT’S Happening at VT-GT!!

News

Date : October 6, 2017 | Author : vtc

We have achieved < 200 PC partial discharge reliability in the Pocatello plant.

  • Partial discharge level is a measure of design capability, quality of materials, workmanship and environmental state of the plant. This goes beyond passing the IEEE tests to demonstrate long term reliability of our transformers.

We have passed 13 units in a row at GTC – two of these were 345 KV. The largest one of the 12 is 220 MVA.

  • It is a source of pride that VT-GT is one of the few plants that can produce 345 kV units in the USA – most >345 kV units are shipped to the US from elsewhere in the world.

We are fully leveraging the plasma table in the control box assembly shop in Troutville, VA for making cutouts in the back panels for the cabinets – take a look at the “cleaner cuts” in our metal work and you will see the difference!

The particle count in all plants have reached the level of the GTC plant.

  • GTC sets the industry standards because it is a completely sealed atmosphere. The other plant teams have stepped up to the challenge of mastering the art of controlling particle counts through diligence, hard work and exceptional attention to detail.

Our hard work has paid off in the past 18 months, resulting in eliminating single point of failure of equipment at all plants. Any equipment issues can now be resolved within 24 hours. Preventive maintenance and stocking of spare parts are the foundations of this program, maintaining our schedule of on-time performance.

We are achieving 100% Ready to Ship (RTS) orders in our 4 plants for continuous several months. YTD the First Pass Yield (FPS), where a transformer passes all the tests the first time, is exceeding 95% in aggregate for all plants.

ISO Certification

  • Recently a surveillance / upgrade audit has been completed to upgrade our Roanoke / Troutville plant’s current ISO9001:2008 to ISO9001:2015.  We appreciate the diligence of our internal auditors in achieving this upgrade.

The most reliable large power transformers made in the USA

UTILITIES NEWS

Date : March 31, 2017 | Author : vtc

Did you know that you don’t have to cross the ocean to buy a large power transformer? We make those right here, in Rincon, GA.

We recently shipped a 168MVA 230kV Autotransformer to the City of Ocala, FL.  We also shipped another 100MVA 135kV Auto to Algonquin Power in Canada. These transformers are made by GTC owned by Caravels, LLC, a VTC family company.  The GTC plant is in Rincon, GA, USA and it was built by Efacec of Portugal in 2008 for the production of core and shell type transformers with ratings up to 1400MVA 500kV.  This technology is now owned by Caravels, LLC

Since the acquisition of the Rincon plant, we have reinforced the engineering staff.  Rogelio Martinez now heads the engineering group that has over 100 years of combined experience in designing extra high voltage large power transformers. Rogelio himself comes with outstanding EHV transformer design experience gained at Prolec, VA Tech and Siemens.

Please consider us for your next Large Power application. Of course, you can continue to count on us for your small and medium power transformer requirements.

 What they’re saying

“We’ve used Virginia Transformer for many years, they’ve been great to work with.”

Brent Reyher, Manager Delivery Services at Wabash Valley Power
